Sketches from the beginning of the typeface design process.

This project was created through-out the COVID pandemic, making it difficult to meet up in person with my muse. However, I got to know him through several Zoom calls. I soon realized that we were more similar than I thought, making it easier to achieve a typeface that truly represented his personality. The funky aspects of Gloaming, such as the high crossbar in the f, emphasizes the uniqueness present in the natural world, while its bold, organized strokes keep it feeling modern. Max DeVesty thrives the most at night, so the name of the typeface honors the anticipation of this phase: Gloaming is the time after sunset but before total darkness.
